SPRUCE GROVE BACKPACKING TRIP

Spruce Grove Trail Camp, in Big Santa Anita Canyon. We will leave on Saturday from the trailhead at Chantry Flat. This is a classic Boy Scout backpacking trip. This is a good tune-up for people going to Philmont this year.

This is an intermediate backpacking trip. The hike is 3.7 miles on the Gabrielino trail with 1200 feet of elevation gain. A beginner can handle this hike if he is physically fit.
The trip limit is 24. If you have signed up and cannot go, please e-mail Mr. Welsh (firstname.lastname@example.org) open your spot up to another scout! If you wish to sign up, e-mail Mr. Welsh and get on the list.

Bring your own trail lunch Saturday, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style), bring your own breakfast bars, instant oatmeal, cocoa for breakfast.
Saturday’s dinner will be prepared by individual crews. Crews will be announced Tuesday night February 28 by email.
It might be cold (40 degrees) at night, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in, a good sleeping bag, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! BE PREPARED. A number of first time backpackers brought car camping tents to our Cooper Canyon trip. Car camping tents are too heavy for this backpack trip. Purchase or rent a two person backpacking tent. REI or Sport Chalet are great places to get a backpacking tent.
Dr. Snaer is always available to discuss equipment. Call him at 626 840-7702 or email email@example.com if you have any questions.
Fires will be allowed in the designated fire pits, as long as wind conditions are safe.
Any cars parking at Chantry will need a National Forest Adventure Pass available at your sporting goods store (REI, Sports Chalet). This is strictly enforced. As the free parking at Chantry Flat typically is full, we will arrange parking at the Chantry Flat Pack Station. Cost will be approximately $10 per car.
