TROOP 355 SPRING BACKPACK TRIP
SANTA ANITA CANYON
SPRUCE GROVE TRAIL CAMP
WHEN: Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27
WHERE: Chantry Flat to Spruce Grove Trail Camp. On Saturday we will hike up Santa Anita Canyon and over Sturtevant Falls to Spruce Grove. On Sunday we will return to Chantry Flat via Mt. Zion and the Winter Creek Trail.
DIFFICULTY: The hike is 4.2 miles on Saturday, with an elevation gain of about 1400 feet. On Sunday we will hike 5.5 miles – we will gain 300-400 feet as we hike to the summit of Mt. Zion, then the rest of the hike will be a descent to Chantry Flat.
COST: $10 per person, to be delivered to Mr. Moffat.
AVAILABILITY: This is an intermediate backpack trip. This trip is not recommended for first time backpackers – instead, we would recommend that you join us on our introductory backpack trip next fall. If you have not backpacked with us before but would like to go on this trip, please contact Mr. Shwery or Mr. Moffat to discuss.
MEET: At Scout House at 8:00 AM on Saturday, April 26. We will divide Troop gear and food then depart for the trailhead. The trip to Chantry Flat is about 40 minutes. We will return to the trailhead Sunday about midday and be home by 2:00 PM.
MEALS: Eat a big breakfast on Saturday morning before the trip. Otherwise you may bonk! Bonking is not cool, it hurts. Don’t bonk! Bring your own trail lunch Saturday, dinner will be provided Saturday night (Philmont style), bring your own breakfast bars, instant oatmeal, cocoa for breakfast on Sunday.
SPECIAL NOTES:
It will likely be cold (40 degrees) at night, be prepared with long johns and a beanie hat to sleep in, a good sleeping bag, a jacket and gloves. Of course always bring your rain gear! Bring bug repellent. And…bring toilet paper. BE PREPARED.

We intend to park at the privately owned Chantry Flat Pack Station – no Adventure Pass will be needed if you park at the Pack Station.

North on Santa Anita Avenue
Santa Anita Avenue becomes Chantry Flat Road at the base of the foothills
Follow Chantry Flat road 2-3 miles until it ends in the parking lot at Chantry Flat
