Mr. Reiling and our scout leaders will be offering the required navigation/orienteering signoffs to our scouts this Sunday, February 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Lacy Park. We will meet at the flagpoles near the Virginia entrance; note that the Scout House entrance to Lacy Park is usually closed on weekends.
These signoffs are often difficult for our scouts to obtain – so this is a great chance to get them. Come on out Sunday to tackle the famous Troop 355 Orienteering Course. See which of you has the right stuff to successfully navigate the course and identify all the correct trees! We will also discuss finding directions without using a compass, and measuring the height and width of designated items like trees and streams. In addition, we will cover the GPS requirements that are in the new handbook, so please bring a smartphone with a GPS application if you are able (if you are unable to do this you can team up with a buddy).
By completing these navigation and orienteering requirements, scouts will be able to obtain Second Class signoff 3d and First Class Signoffs 4a and 4b.
Please bring your compass, your Scout Handbook and a pen or pencil (in addition to the phone with GPS). We would also recommend a daypack with water.
Senior scouts – please let Mr. Reiling know if you will be able to help out. This is a great leadership opportunity.
