American Heritage Merit Badge Class 1 of 2 – ONLINE
April 23, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
For 355’s next entry in our Merit Badge Thursday series, we will be offering American Heritage Merit Badge. This is a fun badge that will give scouts the chance to learn more about our American history and traditions. We last offered this badge in 2017 on the National Jamboree trip – our scouts had a great time getting this badge on our East Coast tour. This time Mrs. Kachmarsky and Mr. Moffat will be the co-counselors – while we will be unable to get as many requirements completed by doing activities as in 2017, we have carefully reviewed the requirements and are sure that we can offer the complete badge. With a combination of Zoom discussions and at-home or family activities, everyone will be able to finish the badge, and we can still make it fun. Quick preview: One requirement can be completed by watching movies at home, and Mrs. Kachmarsky has figured out how you can get the “touring” or “visiting” requirements done with your family.
The first class session will be this Thursday, April 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. You can use the Zoom link that Mr. Reiling will send before the class. We intend to have the scouts get a few requirements done at home or with their families after the first class, then we will have one final class in a few weeks to wrap up the requirements.
There will be a couple of requirements to participate in this class:
1. Scouts will need to use the merit badge worksheet to complete this class. Scouts should print the worksheet, then fill it out as we discuss the requirements in class. Later, you can complete the homework requirements in the worksheets. If you prefer, you can type your answers onto the pdf document on your computer.
2. The first requirement requires you to read and discuss the Declaration of Independence. We would like the scouts to please read this document before Thursday’s class, so we will be able to complete the requirement in class. You can thank me later that I am giving you a typed out version, not the original 250 year old cursive.
The troop emails from Mr. Moffat about this class contain links to access the worksheet and the Declaration of Independence.
The way the class is set up will make it really difficult to complete the badge if you do not attend both classes. So if you have any interest in earning this badge, please log into the Zoom class on Thursday. You don’t need to sign up in advance – your attendance on Zoom on Thursday will get you on the class roster.
Hope to see you on Zoom on Thursday!
